I'm Griff, and I decided to make Wild Rice Soup after my grandmother passed away from glioblastoma, leaving behind a massive and meticulously organized collection of books, journals, and recipes. Funnily enough, she didn't actually like to cook very much, but she did really like to entertain. I posted a picture of her hot dish recipe, and then friends asked for other recipes too.

I realized that as gay & trans people, a lot of my loved ones don't actually have access to their own family recipes. I suspect many other people are in the same boat. Handwritten copies of 'all the family recipes' tend to be kept by the oldest living relatives, and many of them are unsupportive, to say the least. (It took a long time for my Grandma to come around about me, too.) Although googling stuff would be more efficient than this site, it doesn't exactly make you feel connected to anyone. There's just something special about pawing through a box of handwritten recipes, knowing the stories behind them. I think we should all get to do that!

So, I decided to make Wild Rice Soup. I chose the name because wild rice soup is my favorite comfort food, and one I learned from family. Here you can find my family recipes, call them yours, or share your own. If you're here, we can be family if you want to be.
